Different methods can add friction. The practical difference is how much setup, mess and improvisation you are willing to accept.
| Option | Setup | Mess | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| SPC bench press grip mat | Place it on the bench pad | Low | Reusable and designed for upper-back contact during pressing movements |
| Chalk | Apply to clothing or the contact area | Can leave residue | May need reapplication and may not suit gym rules |
| Resistance band | Wrap it around the bench pad | Low | Reusable but slower and more awkward to position |
| Shelf liner | Cut or fold it to suit | Low | Inexpensive but not designed as a training product |
